NewsWillie Sez - 1934The following article was written by Garrett (Willie) Williams in 1934. It gives a tour of the businesses in Bluff City at this time. Thanks to Ms. Jane (Horyna) Schaffer for sending this to us. Recopied from 1934 edition of the Bluff City Paper. WILLIE SEZ WHO IS WHO IN BLUFF CITY There is the White Way Café where most everybody eats, and Mrs. Grove’s Grocery where you can get a treat. Sturdevant’s hardware and he sells stamps too. Stop at Sparr’s Drug Store as you are passing through. And there is Doctor Trager, the best Dr. there is around. A lot of people call him clear out of town. And there is the Bank where you can draw your breath, where you will feel so at home you will be tickled to death. There is Pyle’s Produce, they are never loafing around; they buy as much produce as anyone in town. George and Jack’s Filling Station sitting on the hill, where your old tin Lizzie can surely drink its fill. Then Bill Chamberlain’s Garage where you can give your Ford a pill that will give it so much power you can surely make the hill. Then Pointer’s Hatchery where chicks are hatched just right, where the chicks are so healthy they will not even fight. There is Mose the Barber who will shave you with a grin, if your face feels hairy won’t you please step in. There is the Schneider produce, port of entry too, they will check your trucks as you are passing through. The Long-Bell Lumber Company a place you all well know, where you can get materials if you wish to build for show. Red Star and Moore Brothers Elevators at the foot of the hill where you can sell your wheat without feeling queer, and if they haven’t locked up they are open still. Then down at the Rail Road is Harry Hawk at the desk, he is always working, he is doing his best. The Central Office sitting on the side of the hill, when you give them one long ring they quit their sitting still. And Pat Hooper the paper hangingest man in town, if you do not want your paper hanged, don’t have Pat hanging around. Clark’s Meat Market, the finest in the town, where you can get good meats the whole year round. Jess Brothers Mercantile the largest in the town, you can get the same kind of service you can get anywhere around. Next is a Produce where a lot of people stop, they know that Hank and Buss always pay the top. Hawk’s Grocery where everything is spick and span, where you can get your groceries and where the sugar has no sand. Kehl’s Barber and Beauty Shop where a lot of people stop, and when they come out from there you can tell it’s a barber shop. Then Shorty Walker’s Filling Station and service with a smile, and the gas he sells you, will get you many a mile. Then the High School building we call it the Knowledge Shop; that is where all of our big kids stop. That’s where the teachers teach them there is more room at the top. There is the Blacksmith the best there is around, in fact there is no better blacksmith in anybody’s town. Croft’s Machine Shop and Sam can tell at a glance, just how much money you have in your Sunday pants. And last but not least our paper, The Bluff City News, we always have to read it through before we can snooze. Garrett Williams 2012-06-03 11:01:56 |
